We first met when I was on my way to running away from my fears
You told me my eyes were full of conflict and my lips whispered secrets of my shady past
We fell for each other instantly and as soon as that our shipwreck relationship was written
We met in dark places at strange times
But hearing you heart beat was better therapy than any health service could ever offer
You smoked too many cigarettes and I questioned my future too often
We were so unorthodox, we were something Nabokov couldn’t even construct
My mother told me to stay away, but she never knew I was more danger to you than you could ever be to me

I’ve felt this way before.
But now, I realize
there is no greater pain
than the frigid waves of sadness
washing over you again.

It starts in your heart,
encasing it in an armor of ice;
its coldness licking at your chest,
its numbness soaking your veins,
its frozen tendrils slowly reaching towards
fingers and toes.
Until, finally,
you are submerged in chilling darkness.

The reason why it must hurt
so much more this time
than last, is that;
before,
I didn’t know just how sweet
or warm
the shoreline’s breath could be.
